Abstract

Despite the various techniques used in strengthening the flat plate air solar collector through enhanced surfaces (obstacles) on the absorber plate, its thermal performance remains far from the optimal rate. Accordingly, an experimental and numerical study has been conducted to improve the flat plate air solar collector thermal performance. The technique consists in investigating the heat transfer, friction factor and thermal enhancement factor of flow in a rectangular channel artificially roughened with two longitudinally curved delta-shaped baffles. Two cases have been dealt with perforated and non-perforated baffles. It has been found that the numerical results are in good agreement with the experimental results for the range of parameters investigated. Correlations for Nusselt number and friction factor have been developed as a function of roughness and flow parameters.
