Abstract

ABSTRACT : The present study discusses the problematic of how Algerian society, especially youth, represents its virtual identity in this space formed by digital social networks through the ethics of discussion. This can be achieved by identifying the most important reasons that make Algerian youth try to form virtual identities through which they represent themselves to the others. Moreover, they try to highlight their own views about themselves through the digital space, depending on hiding behind symbolic identities, and trying to understand the way an Algerian uses this identity through what is known as "digital societies," especially in terms of the language and the symbols with which they communicate in the interactions and discussions. That is to be able to understand the nature of virtual discussion according to the idea of communication and mutual recognition between the selves, as well as the dialectic of the relationship in which the self meets the other according to the values and goals that govern the ethics of dialogue in the issues of public affairs. Finally, we can reach an understanding and interpretation of the most important implications of this modern identity on the basic features of the real identities of the members of society. In order to achieve this goal, a quantitative approach was adopted to tackle this topic and its representations among Algerian youth by using social survey due to the specificity of the very large community studied. The present research applied a set of scientific tools, represented in the initial observation tool, to collect the dimensions and the indicators, as well as to identify the study sample. The electronic questionnaire was directed at an intentional sample of Algerian youth selected on specific criteria, and their number reached 400. In addition to the electronic interview, with specialists in the same issue, and their number reached 7 professors. This study reached a set of results, the most important of which are:  In their relationship with the digital space, the Algerian youth seek to form a new type of life, an unnatural life but linked to what is natural, a virtual life that is established in parallel with their real life in terms of representing social, cultural, political, and religious identities through it as in reality.  The Algerian youth's ambition to build a better digital self than his real self—whom he perceives as being completely incapable of fulfilling his goals—was what drove him to conceal his real identity through the digital space.  The digital space is the world of the symbolic, as everything in it is used in communication and expression of the identities and selves of the individuals who use it as symbols and symbolic icons, all of which have certain meanings and connotations, through which the users’ image of each other is built.  The social network activities of the digital person, such as his posts, comments, interactions, dialogues, etc., can be used to understand his personality because these traces are never arbitrary but rather come from the essence of his true being.
