Abstract

The aim of this research is to identify and analyse some of the most recurrent errors made in grammar by first-year students of the English Language Department at Biskra University. This research is motivated by the fact that these errors represent an aspect of learners’ linguistic incompetence. To this end, 92 compositions have been collected for an errors analysis. A teachers’ questionnaire and also an interview made with the students have been used to confirm the results obtained in this study. This works consists of three main parts: The first one is devoted to the learners’ educational background, assessing their previous educational background from mid-school to secondary school, along with some other contributory factors to errors. The second one deals with theoretical aspects, defining grammar and presenting an overview of some approaches and methods to its teaching. In addition to this, a chapter investigates some theoretical approaches to the study of errors. The third part presents the practical work in which the data is gathered an analysed. This part is ended up with the interpretation of the results obtained in this study as well as some pedagogical implications and recommendations intended to open new perspectives. ABSTRACT La présente étude a pour objectif l’identification et l’analyse de certaines erreurs grammaticales commises dans les écrits des étudiants de première année d’Anglais de l’Université de Biskra. Cette étude est motivée par le fait que ces erreurs représentent un aspect de l’incompétence linguistique d’un grand nombre d’étudiants. Elle est aussi intentionnée à faire valoir si ces erreurs sont du à l’interference de la langue Arabe ou à la difficulté de la langue Anglaise. Dans ce but, 92 paragraphes ont été utilisés pour l’analyse de ces erreurs. Un questionnaire administré aux professeurs ainsi qu’un interview avec les étudiants concernés ont été utilisés pour confirmer cette étude. Cette recherche est divisée en trois parties. La première traite du parcour éducationnel des apprenants, à travers une évaluation de leur profil scolaire de l’enseignement moyen à l’enseignement secondaire. Ce même chapitre aborde également quelques facteurs qui tendent à favoriser la production d’erreurs dans les écrits de ces apprenants. La deuxiéme partie est consacrée aux aspects théoriques, définissant la grammaire et présentant une vue sur quelques approches et méthodes de l’instuction de la grammaire. En outre, un chapitre traite quelques approches theoriques sur lesquelles repose l’étude des erreurs. La troisiéme partie présente l’identification et l’analyse des erreurs les plus courantes en grammaire. Des implications pedagogiques et recommendations sont proposées pour conclure cette recherche et ouvrir de nouvelles perspectives.
